Which Members Of Congress Owe Student Loans?

More than 50 members of Congress may benefit from student loan forgiveness.

Members of Congress must submit annual financial disclosure forms that list any liabilities of $10,000 or more for themselves, for their spouses and for their dependent children.

A review of the House and Senate financial disclosure forms for members of the 117th Congress finds that a total of 56 members of Congress reported student loan liabilities, including 4 Senators (4%) and 52 Representatives (12%). These members of Congress included 37 Democrats and 19 Republicans, demonstrating that student loan debt is a bipartisan issue.

These members of Congress reported having student loan liabilities. If the member of Congress filed for an extension of the reporting requirement, a prior year’s disclosure form may have been used to include them in this list. This list does not include members of Congress who owe less than $10,000 in student loans.
