An army sergeant has had thousands of pounds taken from his wages for a student loan he paid off 16 years ago.
Staff Sergeant Steven Smith, 53, was printing out bank statements for a mortgage application in March when he noticed that his wages were £300 lower in February.
The reservist, who graduated from university in 1999, emailed the Student Loans Company to say that he had repaid his £5,000 loan in 2004 and asked for his £300 back. It did not respond and another £300 was taken in March and again in April.
